Food inspectors order recall of Maggi noodles from shops across country over excess lead

Food inspectors have ordered Nestle India to recall a batch of Maggi noodles from shops across the country, saying the product contained dangerous levels of lead.

The Food Safety and Drug Administration (FDA) in Uttar Pradesh said high lead content was found during routine tests on two dozen packets of instant noodles, manufactured by Nestle in India

The FDA in Uttar Pradesh said high lead content was found during routine tests on two dozen packets of instant noodles, manufactured by Nestle in India

Two FDA officials said all the packets of instant noodles tested in the state-run laboratory were contaminated. They found a lead concentration of 17.2 parts per million (ppm), nearly seven times the permissible limit. The FDA officials said the acceptable limit of lead ranges between 0.01 ppm and 2.5 ppm.

The scientists also found high levels of added monosodium glutamate (MSG), a taste enhancer, in the noodles.

"Maggi instant noodles contained dangerous amount of lead and MSG. We had to immediately issue orders against the company," D.G. Srivastava, deputy inspector general of the FDA in Lucknow, capital of Uttar Pradesh, told Reuters.

Nestle India, a subsidiary of Swiss-based Nestle SA, said it had strict safety and quality controls in place for all raw materials used to make Maggi noodles.

"We do not add MSG to Maggi Noodles, and glutamate, if present, may come from naturally occurring sources. We are surprised with the content supposedly found in the sample as we monitor the lead content regularly as a part of the regulatory requirements," it said.

A company spokesman confirmed Uttar Pradesh had ordered it to withdraw the batch dating back to March 2014, but added the items concerned had either already been consumed or were beyond the sell-by date, making the recall difficult.

Srivastava said his team collected more than two dozen packs of instant noodles from stores across the state and tested each pack separately before making the findings public.

"Our experts conducted several tests and each time the results were shocking," he told Reuters, adding they had approached federal food inspectors in New Delhi to launch a wider investigation of the noodles.

Speed post faster, more reliable than private couriers: CAG

In major cities, the performance of speed post is faster and more reliable. The postal service delivers 99% of letters through speed post within 1-9 days as compared to 92% by private courier services that take up to 10 days.

At the local level, the delivery by speed post is 98% compared to 93% by courier services. While the time taken by speed post is 1-11 days at local level, it is 1-12 days in case of private couriers.

In a report on department of posts, tabled in Parliament recently, the official auditor has said the performance of speed post has been better not only at local level and in major cities, but it is the only reliable service at the tehsil and village level.

To compare the performance and quality of speed post with private courier agencies for delivery of mails, a test check was conducted by CAG in eight postal circles -- Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. Checks were conducted by posting hundreds of letters.

At the tehsil level only speed post could reach 100% addressees that too within 1-7 days while private couriers could deliver only 83% letters and time ranged from 1-23 days.

"Based on the results, it could be concluded that the speed post service of the department of posts (DoP) was better than the services provided by the private couriers," the auditor said.

Speed post was introduced in 1986 to provide a faster and time-bound mail delivery service in major cities. However, due to late delivery of mails people had stopped relying on the department. But the auditor says the perception is wrong and speed post still remains most reliable and account for more than 10% of the total revenue of the DoP.

In the test check, the auditor had posted 284 letters by speed post and 287 by different private couriers. The performance was judged based on the number of letters sent, letters actually delivered, and time taken for delivery of test letters.

Teen works as domestic help, still scores 85%

BENGALURU: She has scored 84. 8 per cent in the science stream in the second PU exam and dreams of bigger academic goals. But that doesn't complete the picture. This high-scorer cleaned bathrooms and scrubbed utensils, cooking and nursing, while juggling studies. That's 17-year-old Shalini A, whose life story is more like an obstacle race.

Teen works as domestic help, still scores 85%
Shalini also doubled up as nurse tending to her younger brother who has blood cancer.

Shalini had studied in Tamil medium from class one to seven, when she was shifted to Kannada medium till tenth standard. She then shifted to English medium for her PU studies at SGPTA-Deeksha College. If coping with frequent changes in the medium was not daunting enough, there were bigger challenges on the home front too.

Speaking to Mirror, Shalini, a resident of Mariyappanapalya near Rajajinagar, said her father had been bedridden for over a decade after falling off a building. He has started moving around only recently, though he is still confined to the house. After the accident, her mother took up work as a housemaid in several houses so that she could provide for Shalini and her brother.

With her mum away, the young girl had to run the show in her own house, doing everything from cooking to cleaning.

Just before the II PU exams, another tragedy struck the family. Her younger brother was diagnosed with third stage blood cancer. Shalini would often be in hospital with a book in her hand. "If I had not put in so much time in the hospital, I might have scored better. But my brother is more important to me than marks," says the gritty teen who has been thrown into another tough situation now. With her mother spending most of the day tending to her brother, Shalini had to take up her mother's jobs. Though she's preparing for CET now, she also maintains a gruelling work schedule.

Explaining her schedule, Shalini said, "I wake up around 4.30 am. After finishing my household chores, I rush to five houses close by where my job is to sprinkle water and draw Rangoli."

She's done by 6 am after which she rushes to an office where she mops the floors and cleans the bathrooms. "The work ends by 7.30 am and then I head to another house to wash clothes. I am relatively free by 9 am and go home to prepare for CET. My study, coupled with my household chores, ends by 12.30 pm when it's time to step out again for two more jobs. I come back by 4.30 pm and have time till 6 pm to study." After quickly squeezing in some studies, she is out for more work, returning only at night and once again poring into her books till midnight.

The teenager credits her college officials with encouraging her to study. "She is a hardworking girl, friendly with everyone and attentive in nature. Despite her family's condition, she always has a smile on her face," Prathap Naidu, SGPTA PU College principal, Thyagarajnagar, said.

Shalini has no qualms about the hard work, saying she is happy to support her family.

Speaking to Mirror, Komala, a homemaker in Rajaji Nagar said, "Shalini has replaced her mum. We are also supporting and encouraging her in her endeavour."

Now, speed post via ATMs soon in Andhra Pradesh

HYDERABAD: In an effort to save time and avoid cumbersome processes, the Andhra Pradesh Circle of India Post, is mulling to launch a new initiative of sending letters and parcels through 'Speed Post' from automated teller machines (ATMs).

The postal department will tie-up with State Bank of India (SBI) to launch this new facility. The postal department has tied-up with SBI for post office savings bank (POSB) ATM and launched it in Vijayawada recently. At present, SBI has allotted 95 ATMs in Andhra Pradesh to avail the facility.  Explaining on the way the system would work, chief postmaster general, Andhra Pradesh circle, B V Sudhakar said a customer intending to send a Speed Post has to visit a nearby SBI ATM instead of the local post office and carry out a less than two-minute transaction to send the letter or article.

Once at the ATM, the customer has to choose the option of speed booking. Later, the letter/parcel, which the customer intends to send, has to be weighed with a separate weighing plate attached to the ATM. Immediately, the necessary fee will be displayed on the ATM screen which the customer will have to pay using his credit/debit card. Within seconds, the customer would get two bar-coded receipts. One receipt has to be pasted on the letter/parcel, while the customer will keep the second receipt for record purpose. After completion of the process, the customer has to drop the letter/parcel in a designated box at the ATM.  "Postmen, who clear letters and parcels through 'Nanyatha' system, will visit SBI ATMs and clear the letter boxes and forwarded it to the section concerned to deliver them to the receivers," the postal official said.

"As SBI has become our partner in sharing postal services, we have moved a new proposal Speed Post booking through their ATMs. A high-level meeting with officials of SBI regional office, Hyderabad, was held last week to discuss the modalities of the new facility. SBI, in turn, has offered to develop special software to book letters and parcels through their ATMs," Sudhakar told TOI.

Currently, over 6,000 letters and parcels were being booked through post offices in Greater Hyderabad. "We are planning to launch the new system in the next three months in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh," he added.
