In angry outburst scientist CNR Rao calls politicians 'idiots'

BANGALORE: Venting out the dissatisfaction in the scientific community over "inadequate"funding, Bharat Ratna awardee and eminent scientist CNR Rao today had an angry outburst as he called politicians "idiots" for giving them "so little".

Addressing a press conference a day after the award was announced, Rao, who is the chairman of Prime Minister's scientific advisory council, stressed the need for providing more resources for research.

"... for the money that government has given to scientific sector, we have done much more," he retorted, when a reporter asked if he felt that the standard of the scientific research in the country.

"... Why the hell these idiots these politicians have given so little for us. Inspite of that we scientists have done something," Rao said, losing his cool.

"Our investments are marginal, comes late ... for that money we have got, we have performed. For the money we have been getting it is not bad at all, after all this kind of money is nothing."

Asked about China's progress, the scientist said,"We also have to take blame on ourselves, Indians we don't work hard, we are not like Chinese. We are easy going and we are not as much nationalists ... If we get some-more money we are ready to go abroad."

The  "Bharat Ratna” Award was established on 2nd January 1954 by the first  President of India- Babu Rajendra Prasad along with the following 3 “Padma Awards”:

The “Bharat Ratna” Award is the highest Civilian Award in India. “Bharat Ratna” means “Gem of India”.

"Bharat Ratna" Award  is  conferred on  Indian Citizens, including resident and non-resident , and also on Foreigners  for the highest degrees of  national services rendered in the fields of:-

• Art
• Literature
• Science
• Public service of high orders

In the year 2011, the Government of India modified the eligibility criteria for "Bharat Ratna" Award  from the earlier criteria- "for the highest degrees of  national service" to - " "for performance of highest order in any field of human endeavour"- to enable eminent sports-persons to receive the  nation's highest civilian award.

Initially, the” Bharat  Ratna”  award was conferred on only  alive persons and the award was  not intended to be given posthumous.

After January 1955 provision was made for issue of posthumous Bharat Ratna award.

From the year 1954 To 2013, “Bharat  Ratna”  award has been given to 41 Indian Citizens (both Resident and non-resident) and  including the following 3  foreigners:-

Mother Theresa belonging to the Republic of Macedonia

Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan belonging to Pakistan  

Nelson Mandela belonging to South Africa

Just hours after the legendary batsman bid goodbye to cricket, it was decided that Sachin Tendulkar would be awarded with the highest civilian honour – Bharat Ratna. With this, Tendulkar has become the first sportsperson to receive the biggest honour possible for any Indian.

"Sachin Tendulkar is undoubtedly an outstanding cricketer - a living legend who has inspired millions across the globe," Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's office said in a statement.

"During the last 24 years, since the young age of 16 years, Tendulkar has played cricket across the world and won laurels for our country.

"He has been a true ambassador of India in the world of sports. His achievements in cricket are unparalleled, the records set by him unmatched, and the spirit of sportsmanship displayed by him exemplary.

"That he has been honoured with several awards is testimony to his extraordinary brilliance as a sportsman."

Apart from Tendulkar, eminent scientist CNR Rao, the man behind Indian's Mars Mission, has also been conferred the Bharat Ratna.

The issue of awarding Sachin Tendulkar with Bharat Ratna has been a topic of discussion for over two years. Apart from popular cricketers, most of the political parties had also backed the call for conferring Tendulkar the highest civilian honour.

The 40-year-old icon, who called time on his glittering international career on Saturday, was chosen for the top award soon after his farewell Test against the West Indies ended in Mumbai.

A brief statement issued by Rashtrapati Bhavan spokesperson Venu Rajamony said the President has awarded the Bharat Ratna to Tendulkar, who retired from the International cricket today.

The Bharat Ratna is being conferred after a gap of years with classical vocalist Pandit Bhimsen Joshi being the last recipient.
