After announcing the seventh Pay Commission targeting central government employees on September 25, 2013, accordingly, the seventh pay commission has been constituted headed by Supreme Court Judge Ashok Kumar Mathur on February 4, 2014.
The central government constitutes Pay Commission almost every ten years to revise the pay scales of its employees. The sixth Pay Commission was implemented from January 1, 2006, the fifth one from January 1, 1996, and the fourth from January 1, 1986.
Except for 6th Pay Commission, all Pay Commissions are set UP in third year of a decade.
Ahead of the general elections, the Congress-led UPA government is expected to ask the Seventh Pay Commission to consider merging 50 per cent dearness allowance(DA) with basic pay of employees. This will form part of the terms of reference (ToR) for the seventh Commission, the Union Cabinet could approve this proposal to merge dearness allowance (DA) with basic pay, this week.
The Congress-led UPA government on Monday came out with yet another new sop to the central government employees and pensioners to launch efforts to streamline and simplify the sanction of Pension and payment process .
The Department of Pension and Pensioners’ Welfare has taken steps towards minimising delays in sanction and disbursement of pensions, and making the process more transparent.
With an eye on the coming Lok Sabha elections, the Congress-led UPA government announced above sops for 80 lakh central government employees and pensioners in the form of increased daily allowances and perks for making their life more comfortable.
One wonders if these sops will help the Congress politically to convert its into vote.
